University gets nod for 74,000 sq ft teaching block

A new 74,000 sq ft teaching block at the University of Nottingham’s University Campus has been given the green light.

The new teaching block, which has been passed Nottingham City Council’s planning committee, will house a capacity of 1,785 student and teaching staff.

The news comes just weeks after the University of Nottingham was given the go-ahead to build 100,000 sq ft of science buildings at the same campus.

The University says that the existing teaching and learning spaces “do not meet current demand or respond flexibly to changing needs of students and teachers.”

A statement read: “This project will bridge that gap by delivering a light, vibrant student-focused space that emphasises flexibility, proximity to other parts of the campus and the creation of an academic community.

The new teaching block will be designed by Make Architects of London.

A statement from Make said: “The new building will house teaching and learning
facilities, and will provide a significant opportunity to enhance the student experience, which the University wishes to personalise greater.

“It will be a learning environment that is inspiring to teach in and leads to
increased student satisfaction.

“The building will be part of a new Learning Quarter that includes Hallward Library and the Portland Building.

“The University requires a building that can be used year round, for activities like revision and assessments as well as conferences and other events.”
