Derby Aldi plans thrown out – but College retail scheme gets go-ahead

Plans to build an Aldi food store in Derby that would have created 40 jobs have been refused by Derby City Council.

Aldi wanted to build the store on the corner of Uttoxeter New Road and Talbot Street in Derby city centre were thrown out by the Council’s planning committee which cited traffic and road safety concerns, as well as a “boring design”.

The landowners, Speeds (Burton), first lodged plans for the store back in 2015.

Complaints came in from Wheatcroft Land, including others, which has this week been given planning permission for its retail development on the nearby Mackworth College site.

Derby City Council’s Planning Committee gave the following reason for denying the development of the new Aldi store: “In the opinion of the Local Planning Authority the applicant has not demonstrated that a safe and suitable access onto Uttoxeter New Road can be provided to serve the development and accordingly the development would have a significant detrimental impact upon highway safety on the local road network at the junction of Uttoxeter New Road, Great Northern Road and the Inner Ring Road. The proposal is therefore contrary to adopted Policy CP23 of the Derby City Local Plan – Part 1 (Adopted 2017).”
