Forest owner will step down after club is sold

Fawaz Al Hasawi

Nottingham Forest owner Fawaz al-Hasawi has said that he will stand down as chairman when he sells the club.

In an open letter to fans published on Forest’s official website, Hasawi said that the recent rumours that he would seek to establish an annual salary for himself once he sold the club are untrue.

The letter reads: “As I have said for some time now, I am actively trying to sell the club to a new owner who has the passion and financial firepower to see Forest return to the Premier League.

“Firstly, I have no intention of remaining as Chairman of the club once a deal has been concluded. I believe it is right and in the best interests of Nottingham Forest for there to be a completely fresh start.

“Secondly, if the right owner comes forward and wants to purchase the whole club then I would not hesitate to sell 100% of my stake. I am only committed to securing the best-possible future for Nottingham Forest.

“Thirdly, I am in discussions with several interested parties at present and I hope to conclude a deal soon. I hope you will understand why I can’t give a running commentary on ownership negotiations but will try to keep you updated whenever possible.

The letter comes days after The Guardian reported that Hasawi could earn up to £1m a year after he sells 80% of the club. He was also reported to have asked for a package that includes a share of any bonuses the players earn.
