UK’s first hip-hop school comes to Sneinton Market

Baby People have opened a new studio at Unit 12 on Sneinton Market Avenue A – with the aim of offering creative educational opportunities to young people not in education, employment or training including workshops and educational classes in music production, creative writing and lyrics, breakdance, aerosol and graffiti art and more.

Their unit features graffiti artwork by some of Nottingham’s best known graffiti artists including Dilk, founder of Nottingham’s Montana Shop in Hockley, Tim Onga, Bizca, Mr Off, Tali and Flash. The studio, open commercially in the evening, can also be used by young people from across the area.

Baby People’s educational work covers everything from workshops to full academic placements. Working from primary school age to adult education, their focus is on working with young people that struggle to engage in mainstream education. Most courses can include qualifications ranging from Level 1 to Level 3 units.

Their tutors all work professionally in their field and include UK champion breakdancers, commissioned artists, MCs, songwriters and producers who have played on BBC Radio 1, BBC 6Music, BBC Introducing, 1Xtra and MTV and toured with Jay Z and Mark Ronson.

Baby People has been running since 2005 and have studios in Derby, Wolverhampton and Nottingham. Baby J, founder of Baby People, said: “What’s important for us being at Sneinton Market is that there are so many creative businesses there in one area, which means that our young people get access to this environment and are surrounded by all of these creative minds working as functioning businesses. Baby People are really happy to be at Sneinton Market – it’s a great step forward for our place in Nottingham.”

Baby People also have a well-established track record for programming and running events and festivals in the region and nationally, including Love Music Hate Racism and Punch Record’s Bass Festival. They have regularly brought big names to the region, including Wretch 32, N Dubz, Asian Dub Foundation, Bashy, Devlin, Scorcher and Jammer.
