Nottingham law firms announce merger

Two Nottingham law firm have announced they are to merge in a deal that will create a 20-partner practice.

Rothera Dowson and Sharp Young & Pearce will officially join forces from 1 June, creating a practice with over 100 legal professionals called Rothera Sharp.

Rothera Dowson’s current managing partner Ann-Marie Bowman will continue in her role at Rothera Sharp and will be joined by Sharp Young & Pearce’s Joanne Millward as joint managing partner. They will be supported by a management committee, made up of two partners from each firm.

Bowman said: “Both firms have been in discussions for a number of months now, so we’re delighted to be able to finally unveil our plans.

“The legal landscape is changing and, as such, firms like ourselves and Sharp Young & Pearce understand the importance of being able to evolve, explore new business opportunities and welcome change. The merger ensures we continue as a main player in the market.

“From our early discussions, it became clear that both firms share the same values and approach to delivering exceptional service to our clients. We will be creating a modern, forward-thinking practice that is enhanced by almost 200 years of legal expertise.

When asked about potential job losses, Bowman said: “The coming months will be spent finalising the new organisational structure, with partners from both firms committed to minimising the impact on staff.”

The city centre team of Rothera Sharp will be based at Rothera Dowson’s current premises on Kayes Walk in the Lace Market. Rothera Dowson’s offices in Mapperley, Beeston, West Bridgford and Wollaton, as well as Sharp Young & Pearce’s premises in Arnold, Long Eaton and Burton Joyce will all remain open.

“It was important for both of us to maintain the branch office structure,” added Bowman. “It will enable Rothera Sharp to have a presence throughout the county and I believe it is something that will stand us apart from other local firms.”

Millward said: “Both ourselves and Rothera Dowson have a long-standing reputation. Not only are we looking to grow now, but we’re also looking to the future too. The move will assist when it comes to long-term succession planning by widening our talent pool.

“Having been through the merger process before, we’re all too aware of the importance of joining with a firm of a similar ilk and mind-set. In Rothera Dowson, we believe we’ve found the perfect fit and we look forward to a long, successful future as Rothera Sharp, offering legal services to the businesses and individuals of Nottinghamshire.”
