New homes plan for Nottingham shopping centre

Plans to build 17 flats on the site of the current Church Square Shopping Centre in Lenton have been given the green light.

The shopping centre, along with 12 flats, will now be demolished having been empty for some time, and redeveloped by Nottingham City Homes. The homes will all have two bedrooms.

A design statement on behalf of Nottingham City Homes reads: “In former years the shopping centre provided an important retail support facility for the surrounding residential areas. Its deterioration and the cessation of trading has however effectively brought and end to the sites economic purpose.
“Given that there are already other retail opportunities in close proximity to this site it is difficult to imagine that this location would provide retail use again.

“The site’s redevelopment for residential purposes would allow additional residents to live here and since they would be likely to use the local facilities this would go some way to assisting the existing
businesses already trading locally.”

There have been fears that the site would become a magnet for anti-social behaviour if it was left vacant for much longer.

The design statement adds: “The shopping centre is now vacant but there remain other retail outlets within a few hundred meters which can easily be reached from Church Square. ”
