M&S to close Notts store

Retail giant is set to close its Worksop store as part of a plan to improve its business.

Worksop is one of six stores to close with 380 staff affected, but Marks and Spencer says it will open 36 new outlets over the next six months, creating over 1,400 jobs.

M&S also plans to open a larger food store in near-by Retford next year.

It is unclear where the other new shops will be, but those closing include Monks Cross, Portsmouth, Slough, Warrington and Wokingham – along with Worksop. The firm says workers will be guaranteed jobs at nearby stores.

Steve Rowe, chief executive of Marks & Spencer, said: “M&S stores will always be an integral part of our customer offer, working seamlessly alongside our website, M&S.com, to deliver great products and service to our customers. However, our customers’ shopping habits are changing.

“Picking up food for now or tonight rather than doing one big shop or browsing and shopping online and collecting in store are great examples of this and we are committed to adapting our business so that we stay in tune with our customers.”

Marks and Spencer currently has 959 UK stores.
