Derby manufacturer expands Down Under

Derby-based manufacturer Garrandale is expanding overseas by launching an Australian business.

The announcement comes as the company delivers its first contract for Australia’s biggest public transport project Sydney Metro.

Garrandale Australia was awarded the contract by the Northwest Rapid Transit (NRT) consortium to design and manufacture a sophisticated, automatic water-recycling carriage wash system for the AU$ 8.3bn Sydney Metro Northwest project.

Sydney Metro Northwest is the first stage of Sydney Metro and the first fully-automated metro rail system in Australia, with services starting in the first half of 2019.
Trains will be washed in an automated train wash designed and built to Sydney Metro’s specifications.

It will operate in the new Sydney Metro Trains Facility at Rouse Hill in Sydney’s North West.

Andrew Honan, manager trains and depot equipment at NRT, said: “This state-of-the-art train wash is yet another example of the global experience being drawn on for Sydney Metro.”

Garrandale Rail, part of Garrandale Group, is well established in the UK for its highly specialist rail depot equipment, including carriage wash systems, fuelling stations, controlled emission toilet (CET), lubricating and monitoring systems.

Its new Australian division based in Melbourne is part of ambitious plans for the company’s global expansion, said Garrandale managing director Tim Brown.

“We’re already the most established in the UK for specialist rail depot equipment. Now we’re looking to expand our international presence, and our long-term plan is that 50 per cent of business will be overseas in three years’ time.”
