Up-and-coming racer fuels business connection

Sam Randon

A 22-year-old racing driver aspiring to make the next step in his racing career has been the driving force behind a new business partnership between two East Midlands businesses.

Derby-based Sam Randon managed to raise enough funds to debut in his first Renault UK Clio Cup race, aired live on television in June 2017 and stunned the paddock with his speed by qualifying on the front row at his first attempt. As the premier category to be seen in for aspiring touring car and sportscar drivers, the Renault UK Clio Cup features alongside the world-famous Dunlop British Touring Car Championship at circuits across the UK.

Randon’s next race, due to take place at Snetterton on Sunday 30 July, is supported by local business owner Mark Platt, owner of Incite Consulting.

But to participate fully in a season of the UK Clio Cup, Randon needs to raise a six-figure sponsorship budget.

Platt said: “It was actually Sam’s dad, Neil who made me want to support Sam with his racing. I work all over the East Midlands and met Neil at a networking event. With my background working for Ellis Clowes, I have a huge interest in racing. However, it’s being able to relate to Neil, which makes me want to get involved. We’re both working class fathers and I could see how much Neil believes in his son’s passion, just like I do for my daughters with their dancing.”

Handon’s next three UK Clio Cup races, due to take place at Rockingham, Silverstone and Brands Hatch are currently unfunded.

Neil Randon said: “Unlike many of his competitors, Sam doesn’t just have to worry about driving well and securing a good result. He knows that every race he takes part in could be his last, regardless of how well he races, and the threat of damage to the race car can finish the dream overnight. Support from people like Mark, however large or small, not only helps Sam achieve his dreams, but in my opinion, displays how fantastic and family-oriented the local business community is.”

Incite Consulting is a business consulting firm, focused on sales strategy and business development, servicing businesses across the East Midlands. In recognition of Platt’s support, Neil Randon has arranged for Incite Consulting’s logo to be displayed on Sam’s racing car.
