10 jobs created at Derby transport firm

A Derbyshire transport company has been awarded funding of £400,000 from the University of Derby, creating ten new jobs.

Middlebrook Transport – a family run company in Alfreton, which has operated since 1974 – delivers steel and concrete products to those in the construction industry. The company is made up of 30 HGV trucks and more than 100 trailers.

The company secured the £400,000 funding from the University of Derby’s Invest to Grow fund – a significant proportion of which was in the form of a loan.

Rick Bromley, owner of Middlebrook Transport, said: “The business was being held back, we couldn’t grow anymore and we couldn’t move. Moving to a bigger site has enabled us to instantly grow the business.

“We physically couldn’t take on any more trucks and we couldn’t maintain them because we didn’t have the workshop capacity. The entirety of the fleet growth is purely down to moving site, which was supported by Invest to Grow.”

The money has enabled the firm to increase its fleet of HGV trucks from 30 to 48, employing an additional seven drivers. The new site also had the space for the company to build its own commercial MOT station, which they are authorised by the DVLA to conduct MOTs on commercial vehicles, as well as their own trucks.

Bromley added: “Not only has the move generated more business, but it is also making recruitment easier. Existing members of staff are happier because of the improved working environment, while existing and new customers are keener to do business with us when they visit the modern new facility.

“Invest to Grow has been very helpful and I would recommend it to anyone looking to grow their business.”

Mark Wheddon, head of strategic programmes at the University, added: “We are pleased to support Middlebrook Transport with their move to a new facility, which has enabled the business to grow and create ten jobs, with many more forecast to be achieved over the next 12 months.”

Middlebrook Transport predicts turnover will increase by 15 percent in its first year and its plan is to employ a further 15 members of staff and three more HGV truck drivers in addition to the ten members of staff they’ve already hired.
