A Derby gym is under new ownership and has unveiled plans to invest £200,000 in upgrading its facilities.

Pure Fitness in Darley Abbey is in its sixth year of business. One of the original co-founders, former EBF Irish Light Middleweight Boxing champion Scott Conway, has now welcomed new co-owner James Rhodes-Doughty to the business.

Rhodes-Doughty from Allestree in Derby is a qualified tennis coach and personal trainer and has worked at the gym for more than three years.

Pure Fitness offers a mix of traditional gym, boxing based-fitness, circuit and high intensity resistance training classes and personal and group based training.

The co-owners have also revealed plans to invest in the business over the next two years to upgrade the gym, situated in the ground floor of the historic North Mill at Darley Abbey Mills.

New changing and shower facilities have already been installed, along with new lighting and electrics and a revamped boxing ring. New equipment including Watt Bikes, Assault Bikes, Air Bikes and SkiErgs has all been introduced to the gym floor.

Over the next 18 months new flooring will be installed in both the main gym and studio, a new functional room created, more new plate loading equipment bought and a new reception and café bar area created.

New co-owner Rhodes-Doughty said: “Pure Fitness is one of the biggest independent gyms in Derby and over a number of years has established itself as a great place to get fit and I’m delighted to be part of it.

“We have a fantastic membership and cater for all sorts of people and abilities. We have a real mix of men and women, a variety of age-ranges from the young right up to our oldest member who is 84.

“We also have an experienced team in place and a great atmosphere. Everybody is really down-to-earth and welcoming. It’s not the sort of place people are stood around taking selfies. The thing that brings everyone together is the desire to get healthy and fit and succeed in what they want to achieve.

“The business has been going for six years and it’s an exciting time with the investment and improvements we are planning.”

Scott Conway said: “It’s great to welcome James on board and I’m sure Pure Fitness can continue to go from strength to strength.”

The team at Pure Fitness is completed by personal trainers Alex Rhodes-Doughty and George Farrell.
