University reveals list of Top 200 Nottinghamshire companies
The University of Derby has compiled a league table of Nottinghamshire’s Top 200 Companies for 2017 after it was appointed to carry out a research study to rank businesses by turnover.
The Top 200 were announced at an event for local businesses hosted at Hart’s Hotel in Nottingham. Professor Kathryn Mitchell, vice-chancellor of the University of Derby, gave a keynote speech before Boots was announced as the number one company with a turnover of almost £12bn.
The Top 10 companies are:

4. Wilko Retail Limited
5. 2016 GCG Limited
6. Multi Packaging Solutions Global Holdings Limited
7. Staffline Group PLC
8. Langley Holdings PLC
9. Experian Limited
10. Capital One (Europe) PLC
The research was carried out by Derby Management School academics at the University’s Bloomberg trading room, usually reserved for economics and finance students to simulate trading.
The findings were brought together using publicly available information, including data from Companies House, and was further sense checked utilising Bloomberg data. It ranks the top 200 private sector, active businesses on turnover as reported between 1 July 2015 and 30 June 2016 with registered offices in Nottingham and Nottinghamshire.
Alexandra Charles, head of Derby Management School, said: “These companies are to be congratulated for achieving their position in the listing at a time when the economic outlook appears to be uncertain, but not declining.
“The diversity in business activity for the Top 200 companies, including retail, leisure, service and manufacturing should prove to be particularly beneficial to the region as it is important for the Nottinghamshire economy to have this good spread of company activity including large national employers.
“Business confidence in the region appears good and could be strengthened throughout the financial cycle, provided there are no shocks arising from Brexit. The listing should provide interesting reading for companies who are considering relocating to the D2N2 region, as it suggests that economic conditions in the region are healthy.
“Following on from the University’s recent success of achieving Gold in the Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF), the College of Business, Law and Social Sciences’ close association with business and practitioners throughout the East Midlands continues to enhance our reputation for high quality teaching and globally recognised research.”
