Logged-off: Ann Bhatti, Connect Derby

Ann Bhatti

Looking after the Connect Derby managed workspaces is a busy job – so how does its boss unwind at the weekend? We found out…

How do you relax at the weekend?
I wouldn’t say my weekends are particularly relaxing as I normally have my four nephews and nieces over for sleepovers! Their ages range from five to twelve, so my house is normally chaos at the weekends!

I’m always encouraging them to spend less time in front of the TV and iPad, so we get outdoors as much as we can. I’ve bought lots of equipment that we enjoy in the garden or at the local park – their favourite activities are racquetball and badminton and they’re surprisingly competitive!

If I manage to catch a few hours to myself, I enjoy reading everything from Jane Austen and Georgette Heyer to Dan Brown. I also read widely on Feng Shui and body language and interpretation.

As I’ve just recently learned how to ride a bike, my newest hobby is cycling! I’m also a keen cook and enjoy adding vibrant spices to traditional dishes to give an ethnic touch – my current favourites are spicy chicken and vegetable pasta and lasagne with a twist.

How many hours on average do you work at the weekend?
I try to separate my work and home life, but inevitably my two worlds cross and I usually spend a couple of hours every weekend making sure I’m prepared for the week ahead.

I’m currently studying one day a week for a Master’s Degree in Strategic Management and normally spend time at the weekend doing course work and research. The course is helping me develop a new strategic outlook and different ways of thinking that I can apply to my work heading up Connect Derby.

What’s your favourite?

– Holiday destination? My most recent trip was to Iceland earlier in this year, which was fantastic. My other favourite places are Rome and Istanbul. I love the culture and history and there’s just so much to see and do! The locals are really lovely too, which is a bonus.

– Album? It’s got to be Abba GOLD – it’s my guilty pleasure! I’m not too keen on current music, so you’ll probably find me listening to Bollywood music, or music from the ’70s to early ’90s.

– Food? Pizza, without a doubt! Chicken, onions and peppers are my toppings of choice – with a little capsicum for that spicy edge! You just can’t beat it!

– Website or app? I try to use my Lumosity brain training app every week – it’s good to keep my brain active and the tasks can be quite fun too.

How do you usually spend Sunday evenings?
If I’m not with my family, I’m generally at home preparing for the week ahead. If I do get some free time, I like to chill out watching Netflix. I grew up with four brothers and four uncles, so I’ve been brought up on action movies! Indiana Jones, Die Hard and The Shawshank Redemption are some of my personal favourites.
