Public consultation to begin on £32m Derby performance venue

How the new venue might look

An opportunity for residents to have their say in what type of performance venue comes to Derby is being launched on 16th November.

Derby City Council says the public consultation is the chance to influence the decision-making for this major investment which is to replace the Assembly Rooms.

The consultation officially launches today (16th November) and runs until 15th December for an input by the business and culture sectors and the general public.

The four-week consultation will present the main options that emerged from 18 months of feasibility studies identifying the cultural gaps in Derby and exploring the market demand for a new venue.

Public drop-in sessions are being held at University of Derby, Markeaton Campus on Monday 20th November from 11am to 2pm and on Wednesday 22nd November at St Peters Church in St Peters Street from 9am to 8pm.

Three other drop-in sessions are being held for the business sector, cultural partners and Councillors. Invitations have been sent to them directly.

Opportunities will also be available for organisation and institutional representatives to meet with the project team if they are unable to attend any of the public sessions.

Deputy Leader of Derby City Council and Cabinet Member for Regeneration and the Economy, Cllr Martin Rawson said: “The new performance venue is a major investment and a game changer for Derby city centre. This is an important project that is critical to the future success and economic regeneration of Derby. It is the catalyst for further investment in the retail, leisure and office sectors and one that is capable of enabling Derby to attract top entertainment, cultural performances and commercial events.

“We are therefore leaving no stone unturned to ensure that during the four-week consultation period, everyone who wants to, can have a say and influence the type of venue for this city.”
