New Year’s Honours: National business, culture and political recipients

A total of total of 1,123 people have received an award in the 2018 New Year’s Honours list.

Industry and the economy make up 11% of the honours list, published today at 10.30pm. Businessman Anthony Habgood, chairman of the Court of the Bank of England and former CEO of Whitbread and Bumzl, is to receive a knighthood for his services to UK industry.

Scottish businesswoman Susan Rice will receive a damehood and a knighthood  has been announced for Northern Irish businessman and founder of WrightBus William Wright.

A CBE goes to chief executive of the Wesley Clover Corporation in South Wales, Professor Simon Gibson, and to Timothy Rix, managing director of family-run Hull-based J R Rix and Sons.

Former Sheffield Hallam MP and former Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg is to receive a knighthood for political and public services.  Cheryl Gillan, MP for Chesham and Amersham, will become a dame and Jo Swinson, MP for East Dunbartonshire, will receive a CBE.

Author of War Horse, Michael Morpugo, is to be knighted for his services to services to literature and charity. Beatles drummer Ringo Starr will become a knight – recognised for his services to music.

Professor Timothy John Besley of London School of Economics and Political Science is to be knighted for his  services to economics and public policy.

Bee Gees singer Barry Gibb is to receive a knighthood for services to music and charity. Craig Mackay, deputy commissioner for Metropolitan Police, is to be knighted for services to policing.

Businessman and philanthropist Kenneth Olisa will be knighted. The former Lord-Lieutenant of Greater London also founded and led the AIM-listed technology merchant bank Interregnum.

Strictly Come Dancing judge Darcey Bussell will become a dame for her services to dance. Vivian Hunt, managing partner for McKinsey and Company, will also become a dame for her services to the economy and to Women in Business.

Broadcaster and author Lord Melvyn Bragg is to receive a companion of honour for his services to broadcasting and the arts. Lady Antonia Fraser, author and historian, will also be recognised with a companion of honour for her services to literature.

Paul David Baumann, chief financial officer for NHS England, will receive an CBE for services to NHS financial management.

Jilly Cooper, author and journalist, will receive a CBE for services to literature and charity. Professor Diane Coyle of the University of Manchester will become a CBE for her services to economics and the public understanding of economics.

Actor Hugh Laurie will receive a CBE for his services to drama. There will also be a CBE for head of women’s cricket, Clare Connor.

John Nelson, chairman of Lloyd’s of London, will receive a CBE for his services to the global promotion of British
business and to diversity in the workplace.

Chef and restaurateur Rick Stein is to receive a CBE for his services to the economy.  Robert Swannell, non-executive chairman at UK Government Investment, will also receive a CBE for his services to the public, retail
and financial sectors.

In the technology sector, awards include a CBE for president of techUK Jacqueline de Rojas and a CBE for Dana Tobak, chief executive of Hyperoptic.

Married couple Chrissie Rucker, founder of The White Company, and Nicholas Wheeler, founder of Charles Tyrwhitt Shirts, receive OBEs for their respective services to retail.
