New innovation business catapults into Derby
The Energy Systems Catapult (ESC), part of a network of world-leading centres set up by the government to transform the UK’s capability for innovation, has expanded its presence with the launch of a new office in Derby.
Since launching in 2015, the ESC’s Birmingham Innovation Hub has grown quickly to over 150 staff – driving the decision to open a new East Midlands Hub. The business has taken 2,200 sq ft on the first floor at 31 Brunel Parkway on a five-year lease.
The expansion follows the recent announcement that the Whole Systems Analysis team have transferred from the Energy Technologies Institute’s (ETI) to ESC.
With experts in engineering, economics and energy policy, the team are working with government, industry and academia on energy systems modelling, analysis and design – exploring a range of innovative decarbonisation pathways across electricity, heat and transport.
Richard Knight, deputy director, Whole Systems Analysis at ESC, said: “After many months of preparation for the transfer of the Whole Systems Analysis team into ESC, it’s great to have moved into our new East Midlands Hub and starting the new year at our new base.
“The Derby office is very much an extension to ESC’s Birmingham headquarters and with key existing projects in the pipeline, will further promote cross-working between the team and the various other departments.”
The team are now based at the new Derby office, providing consultancy services as a project partner to the ETI as it completes its portfolio of energy innovation projects and analysis, as well as taking on new projects.
NG Chartered Surveyors acted on behalf of the building owners, whilst ESC was advised by Liz Bailey of CBRE in Birmingham.

“This office scooped the British Council of Offices’ (BCO) regional award for best fit-out and this creative and collaborative space is replicated in the new Derby base. It has been a pleasure advising this innovative company on their move.”
