2018 in preview: Mark Bilton, Banner Jones

Mark Bilton

Mark Bilton, property specialist and executive director at Banner Jones, gives us his business prediction for the year ahead.

1. I predict that employers in sectors which are heavily reliant on EU nationals will make significant efforts in the coming months to reassure and retain European staff in light of the continuing uncertainty surrounding Brexit. Whilst Theresa May issued a direct appeal last month for EU citizens to stay in Britain after it leaves the bloc, employers will need to ensure that staff are kept abreast of, and understand, the ongoing negotiations and that they have a designated person within the company who they can approach with any concerns.

2. The East Midlands will continue to represent good value for money and we will therefore continue to see investment flood into the region from the south as people seek to exploit the attractive proposition it currently represents and also with the aim of capitalising on potential gains in the future. This trend is one that is set to continue, especially with the proposed HS2 growth strategy developments that are contributing towards the long term economic growth rate of the region.

3. In the Autumn Budget the Chancellor affirmed his support for first time buyers through the abolition of stamp duty on properties valued at less than £300,000. Whilst this is absolutely fantastic news for those struggling to enter the property market, I am confident that the Spring 2018 Budget will see a similar support system put in place for those looking to downsize following retirement. This will encourage further vital movement in the property market by helping to free up larger, family homes, of which there are a shortage.
