Nottingham ready to “step into the future” in 2018, say city chiefs

intu has started work on its Broadmarsh redevelopment

2018 is set to be “a big step towards Nottingham’s future”, according to city chiefs gearing themselves up for this year’s MIPIM event in Cannes.

Nottingham City Council has said it is “spearheading significant developments” to the south of the city centre including the intu Broadmarsh redevelopment, the new Broadmarsh car park and bus station, Nottingham Castle transformation and the new City Hub being undertaken by Nottingham College.

Together, says the City Council, these developments will have “a huge impact” on the city landscape.

The Council says the projects represent the most significant investment in the city since the completion of the new tramlines in 2015 in terms of scale, ambition and potential impact on growth.

City Council leader, councillor Jon Collins, said: “It’s really important for the future prosperity of Nottingham that we remain ambitious and take decisions which are right for the city in the long-term. The City Council is behind the drive to make sure Nottingham is fit for the future, with lots of key schemes already delivered and a push this year to re-invent the southern part of the city centre – all of which will bring new business, jobs and amenities for local people.

“The schemes getting underway this year will make the whole area around Broadmarsh virtually unrecognisable from how it is today. New vehicle routes will remove or reduce traffic from around these new developments, making it a much more attractive and pleasant part of the city for people to enjoy.

“A revitalised retail and leisure offer at intu Broadmarsh complemented by modern parking and bus station facilities and new retail outlets, will mean that along with high-quality public spaces, this area will be a real magnet for visitors and help us stay ahead of the game as a visitor destination. Add to that the thousands of city students benefiting from better college facilities in the area, plus thousands more visiting the castle, and you can begin to imagine how much more lively and welcoming this part of the city will be in just a few years’ time.”

Brendan Moffett, chief executive of Marketing NG said: “The southern gateway transformation is hugely anticipated for its transformative impact on the city. Our inward investment team is already seeing increasing levels of interest from investors, developers and potential occupiers with the development of Station Street, as well as the area’s effective transport links. The rest of the regeneration is key to harnessing this interest and attracting further inward investment, which will be one of Nottingham’s key messages at this year’s MIPIM.”
