Approval puts major city centre schemes on track for 2020 openings

intu has started work on its Broadmarsh redevelopment

Two major schemes that are key to the £250m regeneration of Nottingham city centre have received planning permission.

Plans for the proposed Broadmarsh Car Park and Bus Station development and Nottingham College’s new City Hub nearby were approved by Nottingham City Council’s planning committee.

Nottingham City Council leader Cllr Jon Collins said: “Completing this work will have its challenges. I’m sure most people understand that we need to invest in the area to change the southern entrance into the city, and as a result we will create jobs and opportunities for local people.”

The College’s City Hub development will see the land next to the tram bridge on Canal Street turned into Nottingham College’s flagship campus building, with the public realm between the current Broadmarsh area and the new college also due to be revamped.

Work on the £58m College City Hub is due to start in the summer of 2018 and the six-storey building is scheduled to welcome the first of around 2,000 students in 2020.

Nottingham College chief executive John van de Laarschot said: “Today is a special day in Nottingham College’s history as we celebrate the start of an iconic project that will help transform the city.”

The car park and bus station development will include a 1,378 space car park, retail units on Carrington Street and Collin Street, and a new bus station. Construction is due to start in summer 2018 and be completed in early 2020.

The retail units will be designed with double height windows and complement the redevelopment of intu Broadmarsh.
