Green light for Nottingham market mixed-use scheme

Plans to transform the last remaining derelict Sneinton Market blocks in Nottingham into a mixed-use scheme have been given the go-ahead by city planners.

Leonard Design Architects, appointed by Carlton Street Trading, has revealed updated sketches showing how the vacant buildings on Avenues D and E, adjacent to the market, will be transformed into a mixture of 44 student flats, retail units and community spaces.

Plans include a three-storey building with student accommodation and ground floor retail units with further improved stalls for street food and structures for pop-up shops.

John Morgan, director at Leonard Design Architects, said: “We’re thrilled to now be able to move forward with the plans to regenerate Sneinton Market.

“The mixed-use scheme is a significant redevelopment project and further contributes to the ripple effect we’re now seeing across the city of vacant heritage buildings being given a new lease of life.

“The successful planning approval is testament to Nottingham City Council’s significant investment which has acted as the stimulus for the regeneration of key areas of the city such as the Creative Quarter. The redevelopment of these two vacant buildings, improved signage and presence will see Sneinton Market become a lively place to live, shop, eat, drink and visit for many years to come.

“Work will begin on the new buildings in summer 2018 and the new student accommodation is planned to launch for the beginning of the 2019/20 academic year.”

Sam Burt, director at Carlton Street Trading, added: “This is extremely positive news for the city of Nottingham. The Creative Quarter is a vibrant hub and Sneinton Market is set to become a central part of that with these redevelopment plans being given the go ahead.

“As site developers, our aim has always been to make Sneinton Market a special place for the people of Nottingham and to attract more business into the area. We have already received a high level of interest in the commercial units from leading independent leisure venue operators. We are looking forward to spearheading the next phases of development by working with the various contractors and in particular, the Creative Quarter.”
Box Property Consultants is the agent for the Sneinton Market developments while Nelsons Solicitors acted for Carlton Street Trading when purchasing the site from Nottingham City Council.
