£8m worth of food to be destroyed at stricken Derby meat supplier

Some £7.8m worth of food owned by Russell Hume, the stricken Derby meat supplier, could be destroyed, according to documents seen by TheBusinessDesk.com.

The firm entered administration in February following a product recall which led to “trading difficulties.”

The company operated from six production sites in Liverpool, Birmingham, London, Boroughbridge, Exeter and Fife and supplied meat to hotels, restaurants and pubs across the UK. It employed a total of 302 people.

In January, production across the company’s sites ceased and products were recalled after an investigation was launched by the Food Standards Agency (FSA) into allegations of non-compliance with food hygiene regulations.

Administrators from KPMG say that the firm’s creditors, which are owed in total over £10.5m, could receive 60-80p for every pound they are owed from the collapsed company. Russell Hume was owed around £7.6m when it entered administration, says KPMG, around £2.5m of which has been recovered.
