Developer reveals £20m plan to create 400 Notts jobs

How the scheme would look

A £20m plan to create 400 jobs has been revealed by Newark-based Harlaxton Estate which says the scheme is the biggest the town has seen “in years”.

Harlaxton has submitted a planning application to Newark and Sherwood District Council to build a mixed-use scheme on the A46 Fardon roundabout that will include a 102-bedroom Holiday Express, a filling station with convenience store, drive-through operators, electric car charging points, coach parking and an office park. The development will also include a lakeside walk and a local amenity building.

Steve Hampson, managing director of Harlaxton Estates, told TheBusinessDesk.com: “We have managed to bring a global brand to the town in the hope of not only facilitating the town’s corporate and tourism needs but also making Newark a destination to meet.

“There have been over 10 previous hotel applications which haven’t been developed, but we have a firm commitment, funding and the operator in place to build the hotel as soon after planning as possible if granted.

“The filling station will assist motorists in their fuel and convenience needs as the A46 now has a lack of facilities since its dualling especially towards Leicester and it is hoped that Newark will be the stop off destination for all cross-country motorists that come through the town.

“The office park will fill a noticeable void in the town for large high-quality office accommodation from 2,500 sq ft to over 30,000 sq ft to assist existing growing businesses stay in the town and attract new businesses to the region.”

Hampson says the site has been selected after careful consideration of all available sites in Newark and chosen because of the need to be located on the western side of the town’s bypass for visibility, accessibility and infrastructure needs whilst not impacting on the current congestion issues the town suffers.

He added: “We want to work with the local council, residents and the business community gain planning and to deliver this project as soon as possible. As we have seen with other delayed projects in the town that national operators can lose appetite and move focus to another town which would be a great loss for Newark.

“We are conducting a public consultation at the Farndon Memorial Hall between 3pm and 7pm on wednesday 23rd May where local residents can view the proposed development and interact.

“This major development and significant investment will put Newark firmly on the UK map, assist its immediate needs in the hotel accommodation and office sectors and ultimately benefit the region’s future growth and the people of the town.”
