Gateley chief executive Mike Ward

Gateley, the law firm which has offices in Leicester and Nottingham, will open a Guildford, Surrey office after announcing it is set to buy GCL Solicitors for £4.15m.

GCL will trade as Gateley after the deal has completed, which is the largest since the law firm floated in 2015 and the first legal business it has acquired.

GCL specialises in legal advice on residential developments. It turned over £6m for the year-ending 31 March 2018.

Michael Ward, chief executive of Gateley, said: “I am delighted to welcome GCL to the Group. The acquisition will further strengthen our leading position in the residential development sector nationally and provide us with a substantial presence in the southern market, which we see as critical in developing a full service offering for our clients.”

Tony Inkin, managing partner of GCL said: “We are excited to be joining Gateley who have an outstanding reputation as the market leaders for legal advice in the residential development and wider property sector. We are looking forward to integrating with the team and also benefitting from being part of a wider professional services group that will open up many new opportunities for our existing team and clients.”

Meanwhile, Gateley has said it expects its full year profits for this year to be not less than £84m (2017: £77.6m).
