Law firm marketing manager strikes out on his own

Ben Trott

Ben Trott, previously marketing director at Nottingham law firm Cartwright King, has set up his own firm – MarketingLawyers.co.uk.

Trott says his firm’s aim is to “help law firms and lawyers achieve their goals, whether that is an increase in work, increased profit, improved branding, better return on investment, improved recruitment, better website, increased efficiencies, quicker systems, increased staff retention or expansion”.

Trott said: ‘Most marketing agencies or management consultants I met didn’t join the dots between increasing leads and converting them into new clients. There was also no real discussion about the whole picture and the internal changes or strategies needed to maximise any return.

Having spent time helping manage a national firm and an in-house client services team, I understand the pressures that those in the legal sector are facing. Others I have spoken to in the industry were confused about the different types of marketing they could do and which would have the best return. Some firms can’t afford full time marketing staff and many didn’t know where to start or what they were getting from their website or SEO companies.

“This is why I started my business, to help law firms achieve their goals, join the dots, cut through the jargon and support them in their development.

“A lot of suppliers I met said they were experts in the legal sector but seemed to have no in-depth knowledge of the day to day running of a firm and the practice areas. It seemed there was a gap in the market for someone who had real knowledge of areas of law, as well as in-house experience of achieving results in legal marketing and management. The knowledge I have in delivering enquiries and the types of leads I have brought in over the years still excites me. These include thousands of personal and business enquiries, including some from the largest businesses in the UK, Europe and America.”

Trott says he has a growing list of law firms and other businesses in the legal sector as clients across the UK. In the next 12 months he aims to take on more staff and help firms in other countries achieve their goals as well.

He has worked for both a national corporate and high street law firm as well as a Barristers’ Chambers and has a degree in Law and Business. This is Trott’s second venture, having set up a holiday and travel information company back in 2008.
