The creation of 200 jobs in the Nottinghamshire town of Worksop has moved a step closer.

Developer and investor CEG has appointed I&H Brown as principal contractor to deliver the £5m package of infrastructure works enabling the regeneration of the former Vesuvius brickworks site on Sandy Lane.

Work started this week on the delivery of a major new roundabout at the entrance to the site and the remediation of the phase one land for the forthcoming Asda development.

The infrastructure works are set to complete at the end of the year when the site will then be handed over to Asda for the development of its new 70,000 sq ft foodstore and petrol filling station, which will create 200 new retail jobs.

David Hodgson, regional head of strategic development at CEG, said: “I’m delighted to see a start on site after so much hard work; this is a major shot in the arm for the local economy. The development will create construction jobs, as well as training and apprenticeship opportunities. The new Asda store is expected to create 200 permanent jobs.

“We still need to remediate the additional land behind the Asda site and will continue to work closely with D2N2, the Local Enterprise Partnership, and Bassetlaw Council to look at how we can bring forwards the remainder of the development, including a further 300,000 sq ft of employment generating space on the site.”

Councillor Jo White, cabinet member for economic development at Bassetlaw District Council, said: “I very much welcome the news that work to unlock this dormant site has now commenced. This has been long awaited and is just the start of major developments that will bring more new jobs and services for our local area.

“This news is made even better thanks to the commitment from CEG that a number of apprentices will be employed as part of this initial work, which will give our young people the invaluable opportunity to take their first steps towards a career in the construction industry.”

Nigel Taylor, managing director of I&H Brown, said: “We are pleased to be working with CEG again on another prestigious project. I&H Brown will continue to work closely with all of the stakeholders, which will benefit the local community of Worksop.”
