Derby mentoring group ‘most successful in UK’

Julian Smith

Mentoring and coaching group The Alternative Board Derby, says it has become the most successful franchise in the UK after an upsurge in members.

The business, run by Julian Smith and Jimi Ball, moved to new offices in Full Street earlier this year.

The Alternative Board(TAB) gives business owners “the chance to discuss issues and challenges and identify strategies to solve them with those in similar situations”.

Smith and Ball chair boards of seven members which they put together to suit the needs of their clients.

Smith has worked with 125 businesses over the past eight years and Jimi joined in 2017 to cope with the increased demand.

Some 45 companies are with TAB Derby, an increase of 21% on the previous year, accounting for income growth of 20%.

Smith said: “Many owners of small to medium-sized businesses find themselves facing big decisions over the future of their companies or personal life plans.

“They find it invaluable to open up to other experienced people who may have been in comparable positions in a confidential environment. The accountability they benefit from keeps them focused.

Jimi Ball

“In Derby and Derbyshire we have some wonderful businesses and I am delighted that we have helped them prosper.”

Ball added: “I joined TAB because I could see how much difference the organisation was making to its clients.

“It is inspiring to know that more and more are having faith in us and that we are the most successful franchise in the UK.”

Ed Reid, managing director of TAB in the UK, said: “Julian and Jimi are a formidable team. Their passion for Derby and its businesses is beyond doubt, as is their ability to bring about significant positive change for the business owners they work with.

“Of all the things that Julian and Jimi bring, two stand-out benefits are their combined experience and fantastic empathy with business owners. It’s a privilege to work alongside them and if you’re a business owner in Derby, I’d encourage you to explore what they have to offer.”

Helen Wathall, managing director of G.Wathall & Son, said: ‘I initially had business coaching with Julian, which gave me greater clarity on so many areas of my business as well as the importance of creating both personal and business visions.

“I’ve been a member of TAB for nearly 12 months now and really appreciate the insightful feedback I gain from fellow board members.

“I am able to share with confidence any current issues or ideas and gain constructive, insightful, independent feedback. Joining TAB is definitely one of my best decisions over the last two years.”
