Airport tunnel revealed in East Midlands HS2 plans

Plans for the HS2 line in the East Midlands have taken a step forward after rail bosses revealed a series of new developments.

The Loughborough Echo reports that a tunnel near East Midlands Airport and a new mini power station will be built as part of the high-speed rail line through the region.

The tunnel will pass underneath land near the airport and re-emerge onto an embankment and crossing over the A6 close to Junction 24 of the M1, which will lead to a 12m high viaduct passing over the A453 towards Ratcliffe-on-Soar before moving on to Long Eaton.

A mini power station for the line will be built to the west of Kegworth which will feed into the National Grid.

Conrad Jones, area manager for the HS2 project, told the Loughborough Echo: “Effectively there will be a short tunnel in the area near the airport, and we will be talking about developing that design with the airport.”
