East Midlands finance stalwart announces retirement

John Murphy

One of the East Midlands’ most well-respected finance professionals has announced his retirement.

John Murphy, who has worked in the sector for almost 42 years, will retire this Friday (29 June)

Murphy’s impressive CV includes spells as senior corporate manager at The Co-operative Banking Group, business development manager at Baker Tilly (now RSM) and latterly commercial finance consultant at Sterling Capital Reserve.

Posting on LinkedIn, Murphy – a prodigious networker – said: “After just less than 42 years working in the finance sector with effect from 29/6 I have decided to hang up my boots and take on the challenge of retirement.

“To all my professional contacts, colleagues and ex-colleagues thanks for your support over the years, fortunately there have been many more highs than lows.

“As the words from that great musical Seesaw say: “it’s not where you start it’s where you finish” and the last four years working with the team at Sterling Capital Reserve has been great and I know they will continue to go from strength to strength.

“Thanks again for all your support.”

Sam Metcalf, editor of TheBusinessDesk.com paid tribute to Murphy. He said: “John has become a trusted contact over the years. I first met John when he was at the Co-operative Bank and he became a go-to person for news, views and information on what was happening in the regional market.

“My favourite memory of working with John will always remain his tour around the various hostelries of his home city of Liverpool after Sterling had brokered a finance deal for a city brewery.

“Have a great retirement, John – you’ve certainly earned it!”
