Nottingham engineering business closes after 50 years

Commercial property agency NG Chartered Surveyors has sold two industrial units in Nottingham city centre after an engineering and fabrication business ceased to trade.

The two units, on Duke Street in Basford, were home to FC Curran until the company closed its doors this Spring after the loss of key contracts. The second-generation family business had traded from the site for almost 50 years before instructing NG to sell the units.

Richard Sutton, NG director, has sold the two 2,500 sq ft units to Central Shop Maintenance Ltd and Rachel Ellen Designs.

Sutton said: “This is a bittersweet deal as we’d worked with FC Curran for a number of years. I know from speaking with the owners that the decision to close the business was a very difficult decision to take, but a fall in contracts forced their hand.

“Luckily, we were able to use our market knowledge to secure a quick sale of the former cutting shop and paint shop only a couple of weeks after they came to market. Demand for small units is at an all time high especially freehold properties.”

Sutton added: “NG bought the freehold for FC Curran in 2005 from Nottingham City Council at auction – a move that has now paid dividends.”

A deal to dispose of a third unit, covering 7,000 sq ft, is expected to complete over coming weeks.

Antonia Gardner at Gunnercooke legally represented the vendors in both transactions.
