Derbyshire crematorium which cost £3.6m to build set to open

The new crematorium

Clegg Construction has completed a new £3.6m crematorium in South Derbyshire.

The Nottingham-based firm was the principal contractor for the new Trent Valley Crematorium in Aston-on-Trent on behalf of owners and operators, Dignity.

The project involved building a new 140-seat chapel and crematorium, a second building housing a waiting area and associated landscaping to create a memorial garden, footpaths and water features including an infinity pool and reflection pools.

Simon Blackburn, Clegg Construction managing director, said: “This is the first crematorium Clegg Construction has built.

“We worked very closely with the client team at Dignity to deliver a building and extensive landscaping which will offer mourners a place of reflection. I congratulate the site team, which has delivered an exceptional building with a bespoke high quality finish.”

Steve Gant, crematorium director at Dignity said: “The crematorium is a much-needed facility and will provide a superior client service and visitor experience. Initially, we only expect two to three funerals per day but services will be at hourly intervals to give mourners more time to pay a respectful farewell.

“We will be providing the latest audio visual system to enable families to personalise the service and there will be the facility to live-stream the funeral via the internet to relatives that cannot attend the service. The latest cremator technology will be installed that complies with all current environmental legislation.”

Dignity says it will open the crematorium shortly.
