Planners set to give green light to 172,000 sq ft Nottingham student scheme

How the new scheme will look

The developers of a student accommodation scheme that would be 12 storeys high have targeted an Autumn start on the 172,000 sq ft scheme after planners at Nottingham City Council recommended the development for approval.

New images have been released for The Vantage, which will be built on land currently hosting a Plumb Centre on Traffic Street and Waterway Street. It will include 118 student apartments.

The scheme will be developed and operated by Future Generation, which is hoping to complete the build by summer 2020.

Planners at Nottingham City Council are set to recommend the scheme for approval despite fears from Nottingham Civic Society that the building would be “far too tall and bulky”.

A planning statement accompanying the application reads: “Future Generation offer a unique precedent in the student market. They ensure that there is a high level of communal and networking hub floor space within their developments.

“There will be a number of games and leisure facilities located at lower ground floor level providing communal facilities for the use of prospective students and visitors including snooker tables and a football pitch.

“Other floors will have permanent uses whether zoned for studying or common rooms. These rooms are located next to the student hubs on lower ground floor and 9th floor level. This space at the appraisal site is supplemented by a courtyard at ground floor level with a light well providing natural light to the common room below.

The scheme would include break-out areas and bars

“There is also a roof terrace and a student hub on the 9th floor of the building which will be accessible to all. This is intended to be an informal amenity space, providing a mixture of hard and soft landscape designs for students to enjoy. The facilities here will include a bar and seating area for the use of the students. The major aspiration of the buildings created by Future Generation is to ensure that first year students enjoy the experience and want to stay on to reside in their second and third years.”

Nottingham City Council’s Planning Committee will sit next Wednesday (18 July) to decide on the project.
