Plans for 700,000 sq ft Nottingham office scheme take a step closer

How previous designs for Unity Square have looked

Plans for a huge office development in Nottingham have taken a step closer after details for 700,000 sq ft of employment space have been submitted to the City Council.

WYG Planning has sent in an environmental impact assessment scoping request, which will determine which major issues and impacts will be important as part of a full planning application for the Unity Square development opposite Nottingham railway station.

Documents seen by TheBusinessDesk.com outline a scheme by Peveril Securities in two phases on the site of the demolished Sovereign House. Phase 1 will include an office development of 10 storeys and 387,500 sq ft of space, while the second phase will cover 312,000 sq ft over 14 storeys. There will also be associated car parking space.

Sladen Estates and Peveril Securities bought the site in 2015. The scheme currently has outline planning consent for up to 450,000 sq ft of Grade A office accommodation, a new hotel alongside other retail and leisure uses surrounding a new public realm.

In July 2017, a start date of January 2018 had been mooted for the scheme. Back then, Nick Sladen, chief executive of Sladen Estates, said: “One of the biggest challenges facing the Nottingham market is a lack of new development, particularly within the office sector, and Unity Square will play an important part in boosting the city’s offering and will put occupiers in the heart of this regenerated area of Nottingham enabling them to take advantage of these important investments.”

Last week, a smaller scheme for 50,000 sq ft of office space in nearby Station Street was turned down by Nottingham City Council’s Planning Committee after the designs were deemed “too ugly”.
