Listen now: Building a future-fit workforce

Dr Andrew Knight, Sean Bowles and Danielle Hayward-Nightingale

The world of work is changing rapidly. Innovation is enabling and disrupting industries in equal measure.

The construction sector has been a late adopter of technology, but it’s catching up quickly. New roles are being created by the day, and new digital methods piloted on projects across the UK.

But these pioneering technologies and techniques will require new skills.

Without planning and collaboration between the country’s education providers, the public sector and the industry’s leading companies, the sector’s existing skills shortage has the potential to deepen.

What progress has the industry made in shaking off dated stereotypes of being ‘dirty and dangerous’?
Are schoolchildren being given the right guidance and encouragement to consider the array of career routes into the industry?

And how can the next generation of construction workers be best equipped to thrive in an era of automation, artificial intelligence and drones?

These are just some of the questions discussed in this podcast by representatives from three Midlands-headquartered organisations at the vanguard of ensuring the construction industry does have a future-fit workforce.

They are:
Sean Bowles Managing Director of Morgan Sindall Construction & Infrastructure’s Construction Central business unit
Danielle Hayward-Nightingale Graduate Business Manager at Scape Group, the leading public sector framework provider
Dr. Andrew Knight Dean of the School of Architecture, Design and the Built Environment at Nottingham Trent University
