On the move: the latest East Midlands hires

(L-R) Layah Sampson, Georgina Ravencroft, Andrew Cragg and Sarah Merrikin

Langleys Solicitors has added to its medical law team with the appointment of Sarah Merrikin.

Merrikin, a chartered legal executive, joins the team from Chattertons Solicitors and will specialise in clinical negligence.

Langleys has also promoted Layah Sampson from legal administrator to paralegal while Georgina Ravencroft has been promoted to legal administrator.

Andrew Cragg, a partner and head of the medical law team, said: “I am very pleased to welcome our new members of the team and congratulate those who have been promoted.

“Our growing team, along with our recognised medical negligence expertise, means that we can continue to support and deliver services to families in need, specifically those with brain injured children through the renewal of our legal aid contract which demonstrates our specialism in this area.”

Hannah Powe and Joshua Brown

Two trainees from Leicestershire have been taken on by chartered accountancy firm, Newby Castleman.

Joshua Brown and Hannah Powe are training for their qualifications.

Powe said: “I attended Leicester University where I studied Personal Taxation for a year and a half, but I wanted to get some hands-on vocational experience, so I left and started looking for jobs with local accountancy firms.

“I’d heard and read a lot about Newby Castleman being a well-established and reliable firm, so I applied for their ATT course, and I was thrilled to be successful. It’s a very sociable place, with lots of my colleagues involved in things outside of accountancy.

“I really enjoy accountancy and taxation as it involves a lot of logical, methodical process, which appeals to how my brain works! My parents are both accountants, and my sister is also a chartered accountant specialising in audit, so I’m hoping to specialise in Chartered Taxation, if only to forge my own individual path.”

Brown said: “I’ve always been good at maths, and was first properly introduced to accountancy when I was 14, by my uncle, who is also an accountant. I did some research on the profession, and decided that was what I wanted to do and have been working towards that goal ever since.

“They’ve started me off with lots of hands on training, I’m still very much finding my feet, it’s my first ever job, but I’m enjoying it so far and determined to stick to my plan and qualify.”

Partner Stephen Castleman said: “We want to give keen, talented youngsters like Hannah and Joshua a platform from where they can gain accountancy qualifications, and take their first formative steps on a successful career in the industry.

“Both of them have already impressed us with their work ethic and understanding of the profession, and we wish them all the best as they progress towards their qualifications.”
