Support offered to businesses affected by Cattle Market fire

The fire ripped through the Cattle Market on Sunday night

Nottingham City Council has offered free retail units to traders affected by the Cattle Market fire at the weekend.

The authority has stalls and storage areas available at the Victoria Centre Market and is encouraging businesses to get in touch.

The devastating blaze started on Sunday evening and a number of buildings based on the site, off Meadow Lane, were either destroyed or badly damaged.

Now an offer has been made to take up vacant market units in the important run-up to Christmas. The Council’s Property and Growth Hub teams are also working with affected owners to see what other support can be provided.

Councillor Jon Collins, leader of Nottingham City Council, said: “We were all shocked to see the images on Sunday evening of the fire at the Cattle Market and we understand how devastating this must be for all those affected.

“We know it’s only a small gesture, but we’d like business owners from the site to get in touch with us to see if we can help. There are currently some vacant units at the Victoria Centre Market, plus other storage options.

“These may be unsuitable for some companies who were based on the Cattle Market, but they could be really useful for others as a way to either securely store their stock or have a public-facing pitch on the market.

“The run-up to Christmas is a vital time for local businesses and we want to be able to help in any way we can.”

Councillor Collins added: “The City Council has worked closely with the emergency services, particularly around road closures, to ensure that ongoing disruption has been kept to a minimum.

“Now that the immediate situation has been dealt with, we are getting in touch with each of the businesses affected to understand how we can support them to get up and running as soon as possible.

“Our Property team and Growth Hub will be working closely with owners over the coming days and weeks.”
