‘World-leading’ research building to bring 80 jobs to Nottingham

How the new facility will look

Some 80 jobs are set to be created by the University of Nottingham after plans to build a two-storey research building with offices, laboratories and seminar and meeting space were approved by Nottingham City Council.

The university wil build a Power Electronics, Machine and Control Centre (PEMC) at its Triumph Road campus in Nottingham.

The new building will include:

• 37,673 sq ft of ground floor workshop/lab space;
• Individual academic offices;
• Flexible, open-plan research space;
• Formal and informal environments where researchers and academics can come together;
• Arrival space that could also be used for exhibitions showcasing the activity of the PEMC to employers and potential funders;
• Flexible seminar space; and
• A boardroom

The PEMC group is globally recognised as a leader in its field and says the new 60,000 sq ft building will “reflect a world-leading faculty” across the transport, renewable energy systems, industrial manufacturing systems and electrical power distribution sectors.

A planning statement with the application says: “The ability to move seamlessly between spaces internally, whether that be from a laboratory to the workshop or from an office space to a collaborative workspace, creates the serendipitous meeting and chance discussions that are the heart of any research led faculty.”

Sheffield-based Bond Bryan is the architect on the scheme.
