Fate of over 800 Nottingham jobs to be decided today

How the redeveloped Horizon site will look

Nottingham City Council’s Planning Committee are set to decide the fate of three important planning applications today (21 November), that could shape the future of jobs and infrastructure in the city.

The Committee will meet at 2.30pm to rule on the re-designed Broadmarsh Car Park and Bus Station, which now includes designs to incorporate Nottingham Central Library.

Also tipped for approval is Henry Boot Developments’ (HBD) plans for the redevelopment of the former Imperial Tobacco site in Nottingham, which could create more than 500 jobs.

Meanwhile, plans to build a 25,000 sq ft office building on Nottingham Science Park will also be ruled on this afternoon.

If all three schemes get the green light, they could create over 800 jobs.

How the new library will look

The landmark Horizon site had been home to Imperial Tobacco’s UK production and distribution facility since the late 1960s, before production moved overseas in 2016. HBD purchased the site last summer in a multi-million pound deal.

The new development, named ‘New Horizon’, will stretch over the southern half of the site, covering 28 acres and providing up to 500,000 sq ft of new industrial buildings for a variety of uses. The site could also be suitable for other uses, with the planning application also including car dealership use to complement the recently opened Aston Martin facility next door.

Plans to move Nottingham’s Central Library to the new Broadmarsh Bus Station and Car Park will see the library move out of its Angel Row site, which has been earmarked for redevelopment, and into a 33,000 sq ft building in a move that will create around 100 jobs.

Drawings for the new Science Park office buildingThe new Science Park building will include lettable office space, and will be home to 1,000 sq ft of conference space/meeting rooms, a café and associated facilities, underground parking and a further parking area next to the building. The café will serve the rest of the Science Park and act as a communal hub space. If given the go-ahead, the building will house over 230 people.
