Plans to extend Colwick Hall Hotel given thumbs up by planners

Plans to extend the banqueting facilities at Nottingham’s Grade II listed Colwick Hall Hotel to cater for 500 guests at a time could be given the go-ahead next Wednesday (19 December).

Nottingham City Council’s planning chiefs have said that plans submitted by GVA Grimley on behalf of Colwick Hall Hotel to build a permanent 14,230 sq ft banqueting suite that will replace a semi-permanent marquee currently on site, should be be passed.

The present Hall dates from 1775, but there has been a building with the same name on site since 1362, when the first owner, William de Colwick died and passed it down the family tree. Today, the Hall is home to a four-star hotel.

A statement accompanying the plans says: “The high cost of maintaining the listed building and the relatively small number of bedrooms means that the financial viability of the hotel business is finely balanced.

“In order to ensure viability, a function business operates in parallel to the hotel. Functions are accommodated within a temporary marquee that is currently on the site.

“The freehold of the hall and its grounds is owned by Nottingham City Council. Accordingly, if the hotel business was to fail the property would revert back to the freeholder. In such circumstances the City Council would become responsible for the up keep of the listed building.”
