Keane joins O’Neill at City Ground

Roy Keane

Nottingham Forest have confirmed that Roy Keane has returned to the club as assistant manager.

Keane, who started his professional football career with The Reds in 1990 and went on to make over 100 appearances for the City Ground team, joins Martin O’Neill’s backroom staff with immediate effect.

Signed by Brian Clough in 1990, Keane made his professional first-team debut against Liverpool in the 1990-91 season before netting his first senior goal against Sheffield United in the same campaign.

After a hugely successful playing career captaining Manchester United, Keane went on to win seven Premier League titles, four FA Cups and a European Cup with The Red Devils, as well as picking up 67 caps for the Republic of Ireland and featuring in every game in the 1994 World Cup finals as they reached the Round of 16.

The Irishman then went on to manage Sunderland and Ipswich Town. In his first taste of management he secured promotion with The Black Cats in the 2006-07 season and reached the 2011 League Cup semi finals with Ipswich Town.

In 2013, Roy joined Martin O’Neill as assistant manager with the Republic of Ireland. The pair achieved qualification for the 2016 European Championships after a successful qualifying campaign which included defeating the then world champions Germany. The Irish made it to the Round of 16 at the tournament qualifying from a group that included Italy and Belgium.
