Forest confirm agreement with rowing clubs

How the new City Ground could look

Nottingham Forest has revealed that a memorandum of understanding has been reached with Nottingham Rowing Club and Nottingham & Union Rowing Club in connection with the redevelopment of The City Ground and broader area around the stadium.

The Club says the agreement secures the long-term presence of the rowing clubs, which have overlooked the River Trent for many years.

During the redevelopment period, the members will be relocated to an alternative venue, returning once the work has been completed to a new complex.

Nottingham Forest chairman, Nicholas Randall QC, said: “I would like to thank everyone involved in the complex discussions regarding the rowing clubs which are adjacent to The City Ground. These have included not only representatives of the rowing clubs but also representatives and employees of the City Council and others. Our aim has always been to find a solution which is of mutual benefit to all parties and which secures the future for both the club and the rowing clubs at our respective historical homes. We have reached a common understanding for the way ahead which achieves these objectives, and which will cause minimal disruption to the wider area during the redevelopment period.

“We recognise the tradition and important role the rowing clubs have within the wider community. At the end of the City Ground redevelopment we will ensure that the members of the rowing clubs are able to enjoy substantially enhanced facilities provided by the club and the support necessary from us on an ongoing basis to secure their respective futures.”

At Extraordinary General Meetings this month both sets of rowing club members confirmed they support a joint redevelopment with Nottingham Forest of the existing boathouses to provide new rowing facilities on Trentside.

Tony Lorrimer president of Nottingham Rowing Club, said: “Members enthusiastically received the proposals put forward by Nottingham Forest,” while Trevor Rainbow captain of Nottingham & Union Rowing Club said: “We are looking forward to a long and fruitful relationship with Nottingham Forest and Nottingham Rowing Club.”
