Emergency services from across the East Midlands are attending to a huge fire in Newark, thought to be at the Briggs Metal site on the Great North Road, just off the A46.

Some 1,000 tonnes of metal caught fire on Wednesday (17 April). Firefighters from Newark, Edwinstowe, Carlton, Arnold, Loughborough, Brant Broughton, North Hykeham, Grantham, London Road, West Bridgford, Ashfield, Tuxford, Retford, Lincoln and Harworth were called to the scene shortly before 11:15am.

The Great North Road was closed for most of the day.

A statement from Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue urged local residents to keep doors and windows closed.

Huge plumes of smoke could be seen for miles around on Wednesday lunchtime.

Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue said it would be attending the scene this morning (18 April).
