Owner closes restaurant after raising sustainability alarm

A restaurant in Leicester has closed after its owner said he felt “uncomfortable” about the unsustainable nature of the food he was serving.

Aatin Anadkat opened The Fish and The Chip in 2017, with plans to modernise traditional fish and chips.

However, he told the BBC that a recent fishing trip had raised concerns about the environmental impact the restaurant was having.

He also revealed plans to open a new restaurant in Leicester.

A signed placed in the window of The Fish and The Chip said: “Our fishing trip was great but turned out to be a bit of an eye-opener.

“We saw the impact pollution is having on the oceans and fish stocks and we are not comfortable running a restaurant that has an impact on our environment.”

The owners of the restaurant say they are now looking at “creating gluten-free, plant-based food” and that they are “really excited to share our new range very soon.” The new company will be called The Positive Kitchen & Co.

Anadkat sold the former Hotel Maiyango – above the former fish and chip restaurant in 2017 after running it for a decade.

He told the BBC that people could be forgiven for thinking that there were other reasons for the restaurant closing.

He said: “There is more than one reason – as with most things – but I’ve learned along the way that if something doesn’t feel good, then you shouldn’t do it.

“We’re not going to be opening another site but we’re certainly in the plant-based food business and it’s a nice place to be.”
