Notts County’s ‘financial crisis’ brought up in PMQs

Lilian Greenwood

The sale of Notts County was brought up in Prime Minister’s Questions this lunchtime.

The first question of the weekly political bunfight saw Nottingham South MP Lilian Greenwood bring up the plight of the Magpies.

Greenwood said: “Notts County, the world’s oldest professional football club, is facing extinction and is in financial crisis. Will the Prime Minister urge the FA, the Football League and the national league to see if they can help.”

May replied: “The government is not complacent. It will hold the football authorities to account. Inquiries should be made into the suitability of owners.”

Meanwhile, rumours continue to circulate that a deal to sell Notts could be completed before the weekend. A Danish consortium is thought to be close to securing the club from outgoing owner Alan Hardy.
