Bombardier misses out on £400m deal to provide East Midlands trains

How the new trains will look

Bombardier has missed out on a £400m contract to build train for the new operators of the East Midlands Railway franchise.

Abellio UK has said Hitachi will build the new trains for the franchise, which is due to start next month (August).

A statementfrom Bombardier said: “Bombardier is clearly disappointed that we have not been selected to supply bi-mode trains for the East Midlands franchise.

“We believe we submitted a competitive bid – on technology, strength of product, deliverability and cost, and will seek formal feedback from Abellio.”

No job losses in Derby are expected as part of the decision.
