Reuters set to expand Nottingham hub

News agency Reuters is set to expand its Nottingham operation in a move that it says will “give staff the chance to work outside expensive locations such as London, Singapore and New York.”

Reuters will expand to include a sub-editing operation in its Chapel Quarter building, which it says will be up and running by the end of this year.

Reuters office in the city does not yet house editorial facilities.

According to reports, an email sent to staff on Tuesday afternoon saw Richard Mably, the company’s European editor, say that the move would bring more consistency to its editing operations.

He wrote: “Centralising some of our desking resources in the UK will, over time, allow us to operate more efficiently and bring more consistency to our standards and operations.

“The UK is an ideal location for a global desk for a number of reasons, including readily available talent, time zones and language. Establishing the desk in Nottingham will give staff a more affordable alternative to the difficulties of living in London (and other editing centres).”

Reuters News contributes 3 per cent of Thomson Reuters’ total revenues, and generated a loss of $2m in the three months to 31 March.

The company said that it would not force staff to move to Nottingham and that it was a “purely voluntary exercise” that will take place over a number of years during employee churn.

UK-based staff will keep their existing salaries and be provided with relocation expenses of up to £5,000.
