Social housing gets green light at former Speedo site

A Leicestershire housebuilder has been granted planning permission to build 46 new homes on the former Speedo site in Nottingham.

The scheme is a partnership between Westleigh, Nottingham Community Housing Association (NCHA) and Nottingham City Council. Ten of the two bedroom houses and five of the three bedroom houses will be available for shared ownership through NCHA.

The development is expected to be complete in early 2017. Funding for the development was provided by the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA), Nottingham City Council and NCHA.

Gary Turner, head of investment and partnership at Westleigh, said: “The development will provide a diverse range of homes to meet the rise in demand for affordable housing in Nottingham and we are proud to be working with NCHA and Nottingham City Council to bring these new homes to fruition.”

Allan Fisher, NCHA’s director of development, said: “Our partnership with Westleigh and Nottingham City Council continues to prove how organisations can work together to address the housing need in Nottingham. We’re committed to building high quality affordable homes, and these new properties in Bobbersmill will make a big difference to people in need. There will be shared ownership homes in the finished development, so people looking to get on the home ownership ladder should contact NCHA to register their interest.”

Nottingham City Council deputy leader, councillor Graham Chapman, said: “There is a major need for affordable housing in the city – council, housing association and private. Helping to supply quality low-cost housing for sale through a housing association is a new initiative for the council and will help us meet our pledge to build 2,500 homes which Nottingham people can afford to rent or buy.”
