MMU Profile 1Awarded university status in 1992, MMU is part of the largest higher education campus in the UK and one of the most extensive education centres in Europe.  Offering subject areas that serve industry, commerce and the professions, the University has built up an enviable reputation for providing work-ready graduates with the mix of thinking, problem solving and practical skills that employers want – MMU is one of the UK’s largest and most popular universities with around 30% of our students are studying for postgraduate or professional qualifications across a diverse range of subjects, many with a strong vocational bias.

History and Tradition…..

futureBased across seven sites, including two in Cheshire, University buildings range from ultra-modern to traditional and offer extensive facilities and vibrant postgraduate communities.

Offering diversity and choice…….

diversityRe-invention and innovation is key to MMU’s growing student population.  The University offers diversity in course breadth: a choice between research-based and over 1,000 taught courses and an extensive range of facilities to support learning.

The University has the highest concentration of postgraduate taught courses in the Northwest and is recognised as one providing an excellent research environment for our postgraduate research students.  Our strong research profile is underpinned by a network of active Research Institutes, with research-active academics leading research teams which are both cross-disciplinary and multi-disciplinary in nature.

MMU’s longstanding links with over 70 professional bodies and associations, local businesses and other educational institutions, at home and abroad, has influenced a variety of learning methods and ensure our courses are relevant and in tune with the world of work.

International links…..

internationalThe MMU International team  works solely for international students and provides wide-ranging assistance, advice and support, from the moment you apply to the day you graduate. Many of the staff speak a variety of languages and, having spent time in different countries, we feel we can really help and understand your needs as an international student. The international team attend fairs and exhibitions, and school visits around the world, so that you can find out in person what MMU has to offer.

Creating Opportunities………….

OpportunitiesMMU’s close ties with business and the professions mirror many of the North West’s strengths. The University’s International Centre of Excellence in Fashion and Textiles, for example, combines creative and technical expertise with research and business acumen. It underlines Manchester’s status as a world leader in the textile and fashion industry and provides a distinctive link between the University and local designers and manufacturers.

The University is one of the largest teacher training providers in Europe, has one of the highest intakes of physiotherapy students in the UK, and is the second largest provider of Business and Management education in the UK. The University is also a major provider in art and design, law, sports science, and the health and social work professions. Our strong industry links enable MMU to provide an extensive number of professionally accredited courses through partnerships that include the Training and Development Agency, the Law Society, the Chartered Institute of Marketing and the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants amongst many others.

Our international reputation in exercise and sports science is reflected in our 6* rating in the Research Assessment Exercise. The Institute for Biophysical and Clinical Research into Human Movement provides advice and information to government agencies, sports organisations, and the NHS. The Institute for Sports and Physical Activity is a centre of excellence which informs national and international policy.

Around one tenth of the country’s food technologists are trained here, and advances by our North West Food Centre have enabled local companies to increase sales, create jobs and develop new products.

MMU is the largest public sector provider of accounting training in the Northwest, and has registered quality status with ACCA and CIMA.

This combination of innovation, vocational focus and research strength makes MMU students highly attractive to employers and gives our graduates and postgraduates the skills they need to be successful in their chosen fields.

As well as providing learning opportunities for students, these relationships are of mutual benefit to all concerned.  They enable students to link themselves to a world outside MMU and develop practical skills and professional awareness, and they give the organisations involved access to “fresh thinking” with new and alternative problem solving approaches.

The strength of these links may go some way towards explaining why, this year, a staggering 73 per cent of MMU graduates have decided to say on to work and live in the region.

The City of Manchester…..

printworksFrom the thriving community of Chinatown, to the lively Canal Street, Manchester’s Gay Village, the city offers a dazzling nightlife and a host of cultural and entertainment haunts. Just south of the city centre is Rusholme. Sometimes known as the Curry Mile, it features the highest concentration of eating establishments in Europe.

There are world-class museums and famous comedy clubs, ballet and opera, theatre and international cinema. Manchester also boasts of legendary sporting venues, from the hallowed grounds of Manchester United to the Olympic-sized swimming pools of the Aquatics centre.

Getting around the city is easy and affordable, with excellent transport links to other parts of the UK by coach or train. There are also free city centre shuttle buses linking the mainline railway stations to shopping centres and key spots around Manchester.

For the future……

A £250 million five-year investment programme now under way will produce the largest physical change to the University’s estate since its foundation.  The consolidation from seven to three sites will bring huge benefits in terms of academic and research collaboration and opportunities for interdisciplinary work and courses as we invest in our future as The University for World-Class Professionals.
