Creating Opportunities…………
MMU’s close ties with business and the professions mirror many of the North West’s strengths. The University’s International Centre of Excellence in Fashion and Textiles, for example, combines creative and technical expertise with research and business acumen. It underlines Manchester’s status as a world leader in the textile and fashion industry and provides a distinctive link between the University and local designers and manufacturers.
The University is one of the largest teacher training providers in Europe, has one of the highest intakes of physiotherapy students in the UK, and is the second largest provider of Business and Management education in the UK. The University is also a major provider in art and design, law, sports science, and the health and social work professions. Our strong industry links enable MMU to provide an extensive number of professionally accredited courses through partnerships that include the Training and Development Agency, the Law Society, the Chartered Institute of Marketing and the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants amongst many others.
Our international reputation in exercise and sports science is reflected in our 6* rating in the Research Assessment Exercise. The Institute for Biophysical and Clinical Research into Human Movement provides advice and information to government agencies, sports organisations, and the NHS. The Institute for Sports and Physical Activity is a centre of excellence which informs national and international policy.
Around one tenth of the country’s food technologists are trained here, and advances by our North West Food Centre have enabled local companies to increase sales, create jobs and develop new products.
MMU is the largest public sector provider of accounting training in the Northwest, and has registered quality status with ACCA and CIMA.
This combination of innovation, vocational focus and research strength makes MMU students highly attractive to employers and gives our graduates and postgraduates the skills they need to be successful in their chosen fields.
As well as providing learning opportunities for students, these relationships are of mutual benefit to all concerned. They enable students to link themselves to a world outside MMU and develop practical skills and professional awareness, and they give the organisations involved access to “fresh thinking” with new and alternative problem solving approaches.
The strength of these links may go some way towards explaining why, this year, a staggering 73 per cent of MMU graduates have decided to say on to work and live in the region.
