Music college expands to London

MANCHESTER music college, the School of Sound Recording (SSR), has opened a site in London.

It has invested more than £400,000 to transform an old piano factory in Camden Town into a educational facility, providing training across a range of disciplines including audio and sound engineering, music, TV and film production.

The first students enrolled last month and a second intake is scheduled for September. SSR London has created 15 new jobs and can accommodate up to 150 students.

Director of education Wendy Breakell said: “We have always attracted a high number of students from the south of England to study in Manchester and therefore it made sense to open a site in the capital.

“The vision for SSR London mirrors our development in Manchester in that we plan to grow by delivering courses that conform to the highest professional standards.”

SSR’s Ardwick campus is home to more than 300 students and offers a range of vocational and education courses. It was set up 25 years ago by John Breakell whose recording and rehearsal facilities have been used by The Smiths, the Happy Mondays and the Stone Roses over the years.

Funding for the expansion was provided by NatWest and its asset finance arm Lombard.
