Co-op appoints partner for NOMA CHP site

THE Co-operative has confirmed the appointment of a partner to build a major renewable energy centre to power its NOMA scheme.

Dalkia will build a Combined Heat and Power (CHP) station off Cheetham Hill Road, which will be powered by locally-sourced waste wood that would otherwise have been sent to landfill.

Ruairidh Jackson, Development Director of NOMA, said: “Given The Co-operative Group’s commitment to sustainability, it is important that NOMA shows how green energy can be delivered at a commercial scale and a competitive price. We want occupiers to be able to share the benefits of a highly sustainable energy source without having to pay a premium to be green.

“This principle of ‘value with values’ has underpinned our business for years and is an essential part of NOMA’s market leading position on commercial, environmental and social sustainability.“

Ray Howell, MD of Dalkia BioEnergy said: “NOMA is a leading next generation mixed-use development in the heart of one of the UK’s most exciting cities and we are proud to be a partner in the scheme.

“It is a giant step forward for the UK renewable energy and sustainable power sector when a development such as this takes the green option.”

NOMA is an £800m project being developed over a 10-15 year period, with phase one being the completion of the new 400,000 sq ft Co-operative Group headquarters on Miller Street in September next year.

A series of existing group buildings will also be redeveloped and new public spaces created around its legacy estate at the northern end of Corporation Street.
